    Quick Facts about Birkirkara

Birkirkara is one of Malta's biggest towns and home to a lively mix of shops, markets and little back streets where life moves at its own pace. You won't find grand beaches here, but you will find a place with real character. The town has a long history and one of its most striking features is the old aqueduct, which still stands in parts, reminding everyone of the days when water was carried above the streets rather than flowing unseen underground.

The centrepiece is St Helen's Basilica, a beautiful church with an impressive dome. If you visit in late August, the festa in honour of St Helen is a real spectacle, complete with one of the largest statues in Malta being paraded through the streets.

While Birkirkara is mostly built up, you'll notice plenty of Mediterranean greenery. Bougainvillea in hot pink and red spills from balconies, and the air often carries the scent of jasmine. In spring, hibiscus and geraniums brighten up the public gardens, giving this busy town bursts of colour between the stone buildings.
