    Quick Facts about Rabat

Rabat feels like the kind of place where you're meant to slow down. The first thing you'll probably notice is how the streets seem to curl around each other, lined with limestone houses, brightly painted doors and balconies spilling over with geraniums. Locals linger outside cafés with a pastizz and a coffee, greeting friends as they pass.

There's plenty of history tucked away here. The catacombs, dating back to Roman times, are the headline act for many visitors, but the real charm is in wandering. You might find yourself in a quiet square shaded by trees, or standing in front of St Paul's Church, linked to the story of his shipwreck on Malta.

If you've got time, Buskett Gardens is just on the edge of town. It's a rare patch of woodland in Malta, full of citrus trees, pines and, in spring, carpets of wildflowers. The air smells faintly of orange blossom and herbs, and it's easy to forget you're anywhere near a busy town. Rabat blends history, greenery and everyday Maltese life in a way that makes you want to linger a little longer.
