    Quick Facts about Sliema

Sliema is Malta's shopping, dining and seafront strolling capital. Its long promenade is the place to be, especially in the evening when locals and visitors wander along the water's edge, stopping for ice cream or a coffee. The rocky coastline is perfect for sunbathing, with ladders leading straight into the clear blue sea.

Once a small fishing village, Sliema grew rapidly in the 19th and 20th centuries. You can still spot elegant Victorian and Art Deco buildings between the newer blocks. The town has a cosmopolitan feel, with cafés and restaurants offering flavours from all over the world.

Flowers brighten up the promenade in spring and summer, with council-planted beds full of petunias and marigolds. Bougainvillea climbs over garden walls, adding splashes of magenta to the streets. For all its bustle, Sliema still has quieter side streets where potted hibiscus and geraniums bring colour to the limestone façades. It's a lively, stylish place with the sea always in sight.
